At 99, Dick Van Dyke has not lost a step with his humor.
On Sunday, Oct. 5, he and his wife Arlene attended the Vandy High Tea event in Malibu, California, which raised funds for The Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the upcoming Dick Van Dyke Museum. The gathering featured songs and stories from Van Dyke’s life and career, performances by the actors singing group, The Vantastix, as well as Dan West and LoveyDove.
Van Dyke’s milestone birthday, coming up in December, inevitably came up. “That’s right. I’m not officially 100 until December. Two months. Two months,” he noted.
“It’d be funny if I didn’t make it,” he jokingly added, according to People.
Reflecting on his longevity, Van Dyke quipped, “I brag sometimes about how I made it to 100 and the truth is, if I had known I was going to live this long, I would’ve taken better care of myself. And it is frustrating because I don’t know what I did right. Other than her (his wife Arlene), I didn’t do anything right.” The couple, separated by a 46-year age gap, married in 2012.
What’s his secret to a long life?
That might remain a mystery. Perhaps it’s the encouragement of his wife, his enduring zest for life or the weekly gym routine he maintains at 99.
On Sept. 26, Rick Springfield ran into Van Dyke at the gym and shared a photo of the two of them on social media.
“Filming an episode of Men’s Health and I went to the gym and who should be there but 99-year-old Dick Van Dyke working out on every machine,” Springfield wrote. “I thought I was doing well at 76, but Dick got up from the chest press machine and did a little dance step before I left! ❤️ Amazing!”
