Fans who missed the demon-fighting trio on the big screen the first time won’t have to wait much longer for another chance to join the hunt.
Netflix announced Wednesday that “KPop Demon Hunters: The Sing-Along” will return to theaters for a limited three-day “theatrical event” running Friday, Oct. 31, through Sunday, Nov. 2.
The special screening will play at AMC, Regal and Cinemark. Tickets will go on sale beginning Friday, Oct. 17.
Variety noted that the theater screening is “significant because the nation’s top circuits are usually loath to program films from the theatrical-averse Netflix.”
Fans took to X to share their excitement and reactions. Some expressed enthusiasm, with comments like, “Kpop demons and karaoke? consider my soul sold” and “can’t wait to go back it was my best experience at the movie theatre by far.”
Others were a little more skeptical, joking, “they’re really trying to milk this one,” or, “Netflix really said ‘let’s traumatize the theaters again but make it musical.’”
How did the film perform in theaters the first time?
When Huntr/x last appeared on the big screen, the film grossed $18 million domestically over a two-day period, Deseret News previously reported.
Other films that have released sing-along versions in theaters
Only a handful of movies have received the sing-along treatment, and even fewer have returned to theaters twice. Titles like “Wicked,” “Moana” and “Encanto” have released sing-along versions more recently, while classics like “Grease” and “The Wizard of Oz” helped popularize the trend years ago.
Netflix and theatrical releases
Netflix has rarely debuted original films in theaters, with only 25 titles receiving theatrical runs, according to The Numbers. The last Netflix film to move from the streaming platform to the theater for a limited time was “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” in 2022, grossing $15 million in the box office.
