Disney sequel skeptics may be pleasantly surprised by “Zootopia 2,” a playful return to one of the studio’s most inventive worlds. Nine years after their first adventure, the “dumb bunny” and “clever fox” are back, and the sequel may prove the wait was worthwhile.

The story follows Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) as they navigate the growing pains of their evolving partnership. Their latest case pulls the pair deep into the expanded world of Zootopia, from the bustling underbelly of Marsh Market to the frostbitten manors of Tundratown. The world-building once again feels rich and detailed, giving audiences more corners of the city to sniff out and explore.

The sequel also introduces a new cast of characters, including Ke Huy Quan as Gary De Snake, Macaulay Culkin as Cattrick Lynxley, Fortune Feimster as Nibbles, and Robert Irwin as koala Robert Furwin.

The story centers on Gary, a snake with a story to shed, who is determined to clear his species’ tarnished reputation after decades of social exile. His arc aims to reinforce the film’s message on perseverance and following one’s instinct when the odds seem stacked high against you.

While the film includes nods to the original’s social commentary, “Zootopia 2″ leans more fully into themes of teamwork, resilience and finding one’s place in a world that doesn’t always make room easily. Between chase scenes, comedic commentary and a whole herd of clever animal puns, the film underscores the idea that any voice — any paw, any claw or even someone with no paws at all — can make a difference.

Shakira returns as Zootopia’s biggest pop star, Gazelle, performing a new original song, “Zoo.” With a melody reminiscent of the upbeat optimism of “Try Everything,” the new track adds a catchy tune that may linger with audiences long after the credits roll.
