High fashion tends to go hand in hand with awards ceremonies, but Nate Bargatze dressed down for the Grammys Sunday night.

In fact, Bargatze — who was up against fellow comedians including Bill Burr and Jamie Foxx for best comedy album — didn’t even leave the comfort of his couch for the big night.

During the pre-show premiere ceremony, hosted by “Glee” star Darren Criss, Bargatze was lounging on the couch under a blanket when he heard that he won his first Grammy for the comedy special “Your Friend, Nate Bargatze.”

As Criss announced Bargatze’s name, a video shows the comedian from Tennessee covering his hands in disbelief. Bargatze seems so shocked that he doesn’t even say anything during the video as those around him celebrate the win.

Since Bargatze wasn’t in attendance, Criss accepted the award on the comedian’s behalf.

What Nate Bargatze said about his Grammy win

After the ceremony, Bargatze posted the video that shows him reacting to the Grammy win.

“I am honestly blown away and as surprised as the video shows,” he shared on Instagram. “... Thank you to all that have ever been to a show or watched a special. Thank you to every comedian that has been a part of my life. I love stand up comedy so much and so excited to see how stand up is exploding. Thank you to my family who has been so supportive of me. Especially my beautiful wife Laura and our wonderful daughter Harper. God has truly blessed me with so much love and support around me.”

“Your Friend, Nate Bargatze” was also nominated for three Emmys last year but didn’t take home a win. Bargatze hosted that Emmys ceremony with a focus on keeping the acceptance speeches brief by adding or subtracting to his $100,000 donation to the Boys and Girls Club of America.

The comedian also earned a Grammy nomination in 2022 for his special “The Greatest Average American.”

That title is now lending itself to a new game show Bargatze executive produces and hosts. The show offers a grand prize of $67,920 — roughly the average American salary — and premieres Feb. 25 on ABC.

A busy season for Nate Bargatze

Bargatze’s big Grammy win comes amid his “Big Dumb Eyes” world tour that currently extends through the middle of August.

The show earned the top spot for highest-grossing comedy show last year, as the Deseret News previously reported.

“Big Dumb Eyes” was especially popular in Utah, where it broke an attendance record at Salt Lake City’s Delta Center with four sold-out shows. The run became the arena’s highest-attended comedy act, drawing more than 56,500 fans, according to a news release shared with the Deseret News.

It also marked the No. 2 most attended event in Delta Center history — second only to Garth Brooks in 2015, per the news release.

Bargatze will make his feature film debut starring alongside Mandy Moore in “The Breadwinner,” which hits theaters March 13.

An amusement park in Nashville is also in the works, per Deseret News.

The comedian said he wants to create “safe” environments for people to escape the “chaos” of the world, Deseret News reported.

“I want to create moments for you guys and your families,” he said. “And I want to continue to gain your trust because you don’t owe this to me. You can trust me and know that I’m building stuff with you in mind.”
