Taylor Swift introduced Team USA’s “Blade Angels,” or the three American female figure skaters, this week for NBC Sports, calling the trio “American Showgirls” — a reference to her latest album “The Life of a Showgirl.”
The background: Swift narrated the video alongside the music from her latest single “Opalite,” sharing a quick blurb about each of the three skaters — Amber Glenn, Alysa Liu and Isabeau Levito.
Here’s what she said about each of the skaters:
- Glenn: “Amber will be the first to tell you about how many battles she’s fought and how the ones she’s lost have meant as much as the wins. Her superpower now is embracing the fight and daring the world to test her self-belief.”
- Liu: “As for Alysa, she walked away from skating when she was 16, but then, came back, on her own terms. Joy fuels her now. Every jump, a celebration. Every performance a testament to the beauty of knowing yourself.”
- Levito: “And then, Isabeau. I mean, she’s destiny personified. Her mom grew up in Milan, and her nona, her grandma, lives exactly 13 minutes from the Olympic rink. When you can skate like you’re meant to be out there, history has a funny way of showing up.”
The Women’s Figure Skating Short Program took place Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 12:30 p.m. on USA Network. Catch the full event streaming on Peacock, or you can see the Blade Angels’ performances featured in the Feb. 17 edition of “Primetime in Milan” airing at 6 p.m. MST on NBC.
Taylor Swift and the Olympic Games
This isn’t the first time Swift has gotten involved in the Olympic Games.
She previously released a cameo at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony.
What Swift said: “I just wanted to say thank you!” Swift said in a prerecorded video message, per InStyle. “Getting to learn your stories and see everything that you’ve sacrificed and all you determination and hard work and passion and everything that’s gotten you to this point where you’re so excellent at something, it’s just really inspiring.”
Commenting on an Olympic engagement: Swift also congratulated Team USA Alpine skiing gold medalist Breezy Johnson on her engagement that took place at the Olympics. On the Instagram carousel, one of the photos featured a shot of the engraving on the engagement box that read lyrics from a Taylor Swift song, “Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy.”
On the post, the global pop star commented with the follow-up lyrics to her song “The Alchemy” and congratulated the couple.
What Swift commented: “‘Where’s the trophy? He just comes running over to me’ CONGRATULATIONS!!!”
A theme song for Beijing: Another Olympic moment for longtime Swifties was when Swift’s song “Change” was selected as a theme for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Swift even recorded a second version of her music video for the “Fearless” track that featured different Olympic events and athletes, per USA Today.
