In a new Church News video, “A Baby Was Born,” President M. Russell Ballard and Elder D. Todd Christofferson speak of the birth and mission of Joseph Smith from his birthplace in Sharon, Vermont.

This week, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrate the 200th anniversary of Joseph Smith’s First Vision, which eventually led to the founding of the church 10 years later.

“We are in the birthplace of a prophet of God, a prophet to give us the fullness of the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ,” President Ballard says in the video that was filmed on Oct. 19, 2019 amid the fall foliage of Vermont, adding that he is humbled to think of how Joseph Smith was his great-great-uncle.

“What’s typical to me of the way the Lord seems to do things, out of very humble circumstances, in this spot, very small home, and there is born a babe who will change the course of history,” said Elder Christofferson.
