A mission leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in Mexico City is recovering after being shot Saturday during an attempted robbery.

President R. Tyler Wallis, president of the Mexico Mexico City West Mission, was shot once by an intruder in the mission home at approximately 2 a.m. local time. His wife, Sister Elizabeth Wallis, was not injured during the incident.

“President Wallis is currently receiving medical care in an intermediate care unit in Mexico City,” said church spokesman Sam Penrod in a statement. “He is in stable condition, responding well to treatment and under observation.”

Sister Wallis is being supported by the Mexico Area Presidency, who are also helping to oversee the missionaries assigned to the Mexico Mexico City West Mission, all of whom are safe, said Penrod.

President and Sister Wallis, from Orlando, Florida, have been serving in Mexico City since July 1.

The church is cooperating with local authorities as they investigate the incident, Penrod said.

“Our prayers are with President and Sister Wallis, their family members and the missionaries during this challenging time,” said Penrod. “The Church is grateful for the thousands of missionaries and their leaders serving as volunteers throughout the world to extend the love and peace that the Savior Jesus Christ offers to each of us.”
