The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel — which is owned by the real estate investment arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — will close on Nov. 1 and be demolished, according to a press release issued Tuesday by Property Reserve.
The hotel, located at 122 W. South Temple, is closing in response to rising costs “to maintain, operate, and update its aging structure,” according to the press release.
Initial plans call for the site to be used for parking in support of the Salt Lake Temple open house, set to begin in April 2027, according to the release.
“Upon completion, the parking area will include landscaping that will complement Temple Square to the east and the FamilySearch Library to the north,” according to the release. “Any long-term change-of-use for the site following the temple open house is yet to be determined.”
Property Reserve reports the demolition process of the hotel structure and attached parking garage will be completed in a “floor-by-floor process that will allow recyclable materials to be handled sustainably.”
Property Reserve will be providing financial and job-search support to hotel employees to help them transition to new jobs, according to the release.
Following demolition of the hotel, Salt Lake City will have 28 hotels with a total of 7,421 rooms within a 1-mile radius of downtown.
