Rep. Mike Kennedy, R-Utah, urged his colleagues in Congress to put Salt Lake City on their family calendars in 2027 — and to come see the Salt Lake Temple during what’s expected to be one of the largest public open houses in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“In 2027, beginning in April and ending in October, the Salt Lake Temple … will be open to public tours,” Kennedy said in his one-minute floor speech, standing next to a picture of the temple. He called the event a historic moment for Utah and invited House members and their families to visit and tour the temple with him.

The Church of Jesus Christ previously announced that the renovated Salt Lake Temple will host a public open house celebration from April to October 2027, with additional details to be shared as the dates get closer.

He suggested that the six-month open house could draw 3 million to 5 million visitors.

A landmark — and a piece of Utah history

Construction of the temple began in 1853 and Kennedy noted that the project took 40 years “with the goal to construct it so it would last throughout time.”
