A missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Salem, Utah, died unexpectedly Saturday of an unknown medical cause.

Elder Caleb Gene Martin, 21, serving in the New Mexico Farmington Mission, died in his sleep on Jan. 3, 2026, “from a medical cause that has not yet been determined,” said Church spokesman Sam Penrod in a statement released Sunday.

An autopsy is planned.

Elder Martin “has faithfully served since May 2024,” said Penrod.
