Elder Clark G. Gilbert of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has spoken only once at a general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

But serving as a General Authority Seventy and the Commissioner of the Church Educational System for nearly five years prior to his recent call to the apostleship, Elder Gilbert has spoken on several occasions to different audiences.

See 10 quotes from the new apostle’s teachings at general conference and a handful of other occasions below.

1. Christ is the way to ‘greater joy and happiness’

“Christ is always pointing you to something better. If you’ll follow him, you’ll find greater joy and happiness, and it’s never a sacrifice if you’re following what the Savior would ask you to do.”

2. Find the Savior in the Family Proclamation

“Our message today is that as you look for the Savior in the Family Proclamation, you will see yourself in God’s plan for his family and learn more of his plan for your eternal family….

“Jesus is the Christ. He is central to the plan and the proclamation. He will make all right as we look to him. Find the Savior in the Family Proclamation.”

3. BYU is to be deliberate in fulfilling its divine mission

“To apply (President Russell M. Nelson’s) words to this university, I believe that the Lord will use BYU to ‘help to prepare a people who will help prepare the world for the second coming of the Lord.’ In many ways, this is the mission of BYU. May we be more deliberate in that mission as we embark on the second half of the second century of Brigham Young University.”

4. ‘Be a light to the world’

“If you let the call for excellence supersede your call to discipleship, you will risk mimicking the world and, in some ways, eventually apologizing for your faith. Conversely, if you let your call for faithfulness cause you to isolate yourself from the world, you may preserve your faith, but you will miss the opportunity to be a light to the world….

“As you leave BYU today, have the courage to stand up and be that light to the world. Maintain your spiritual integrity, even as you engage as the ambassador and peacemaker that our prophet has asked you to be.”

5. ‘Make the Lord your partner’

“How will you use your education to help bless your future family, the church, and your community? I promise you that if you will continue to make the Lord your partner in your future growth and development — the same way you have involved him in your educational development…, he will amplify and strengthen you in ways you can hardly believe.”

6. ‘Dare to be different’

“As secular forces sometimes bear down and make religiously affiliated schools feel isolated, it is increasingly important to understand that religious identity is not only important to a religious community, but it strengthens the academy and society more generally. Do not hide your light under a bushel. Carry it with strength and conviction. Dare to be different in ways that are true to your distinctive light.”

7. Turn to covenants for comfort

“For any of you who are struggling with challenges that don’t seem fair, don’t turn to the world for answers. Please turn to the covenants that bind you to Jesus Christ. He can comfort you in a way no one else can.”

8. Christ ‘sees divine potential’

“Jesus Christ sees divine potential no matter where we start. He saw it in the beggar, the sinner and the infirm. He saw it in the fisherman, the tax collector and even the zealot. No matter where we start, Christ considers what we do with what we are given.”

9. A miracle in the Lord’s church

View Comments

“Brothers and sisters, one of the miracles of this, the Lord’s church, is that each of us can become something more in Christ. I know of no other organization that gives its members more opportunities to serve, give back, repent and become better people. Whether we start in abundant or difficult circumstances, let us keep our sights and our slopes pointed heavenward. As we do, Christ will lift us to a higher place.”

10. ‘The Lord is with you’

“Brothers and sisters, I know this is a challenging time for so many of you. I know you sometimes have fears about completing your schooling amidst a world in commotion. But I testify to you that the Lord is with you, and he will help you find hope and strength in these tumultuous times. We love you, and we pray for you.”
