The Charlotte North Carolina Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints now has a new location, according to a First Presidency announcement published Monday on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
The future temple, to be the church’s second operating temple in North Carolina, will now be located on a 7.7-acre site at 5926 Mathews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Previous plans to build the Charlotte temple in Weddington, a southern suburb of Charlotte, were announced on May 30, 2023, roughly eight weeks after the temple was first announced in the April 2023 general conference.
The temple’s new location will place it just outside of Charlotte and approximately 15 miles northeast of its previously planned location.
“Jesus Christ is the reason we build temples,” late church President Russell M. Nelson said, just moments before announcing the Charlotte temple in April 2023.
“Each is His holy house,” he said. “Making covenants and receiving essential ordinances in the temple, as well as seeking to draw closer to Him there, will bless your life in ways no other kind of worship can.”
The Charlotte North Carolina Temple was one of 15 temples announced by President Nelson in the April 2023 general conference and is the second announced temple for North Carolina.
The state’s first temple — the Raleigh North Carolina Temple — was originally dedicated in 1999, and when the Charlotte temple was first announced in April 2023, there were roughly 94,000 Latter-day Saints living in North Carolina.
Now, almost three years after the Charlotte temple was announced, there are nearly 98,000 Latter-day Saints living in the state.
The future Charlotte temple will help serve these members and facilitate temple worship for those who currently travel approximately 80 miles south to the nearest temple — the Columbia South Carolina Temple.
Details about the Charlotte temple’s groundbreaking are yet to be announced.
