Stanley recalled 2.6 million mugs sold in the United States due to a defect in the lids.
In a statement from Stanley, the company said it was “voluntarily” recalling the 12-ounce and 16-ounce Switchback and 12-ounce, 16-ounce and 20-ounce Trigger Action Travel Mugs “in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.”
The recall was issued because “the lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard,” per Stanley.
Stanley has received 91 reports globally, 16 of which are from the U.S., of mug lids coming off while in use, the commission reported. Of those reports, 38 people received burns, including 11 who required medical attention.
The recalled mugs were sold at major retailers including Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Target from June 2016 though December 2024.
In a statement, Stanley said it is “committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life.”
