On Tuesday, Feb. 4, Uber Eats released the extended cut of their 2025 Super Bowl commercial starring Matthew McConaughey.
The “Interstellar” actor dives into why he believes that football is really a conspiracy to sell food and he is ready to show you why in 60 seconds.
What is the Uber Eats commercial about?
“Look, from the very beginning, football’s been a conspiracy to make us hungry,” McConaughey says in the beginning of the commercial.
The commercial proceeds to cut to the “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” star being depicted as various people in football history.
From 1876 — the year football was invented — to the upcoming 2025 Super Bowl, McConaughey is joined by Kevin Bacon, Sean Evans, Charli XCX, Martha Stewart and Greta Gerwig as he theorizes different ways food has influenced the world of football, according to People.
The actor expresses that the football is called a “pigskin” so people would think about bacon, the Buffalo Bills were founded while eating hot wings and the Super Bowl is called such because “you can’t eat out of a cup,” according the commercial.
Why Matthew McConaughey?
According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the head of marketing for Uber, Georgie Jeffreys, said that McConaughey was the perfect person to go along with the conspiracy because “he’s an NFL fanatic, he very much is synergistic with this eccentric idea that actually football is some crazy conspiracy just to make you hungry.”
McConaughey also seems to be a little bit of a foodie after sharing the secret behind his famous tuna sandwich, according an Uber Eats X post.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Uber Eats wasn’t planning to make a Super Bowl campaign, but when their first commercials with McConaughey got such good reactions, they felt that they had “lighting in a bottle” and had to continue the story.
Every part of the commercial, from the cast to the jokes, was given a lot of thought. Jeffreys explained to The Hollywood Reporter that “the ensemble allows us to actually tap into lots of different fan bases and ensure that there’s something for everyone.”
One X user commented on McConaughey’s post with the commercial, saying, “this is one of the most brilliant ads that (they) have seen in a very long time.”
Uber Eats hopes that the story will continue to grow throughout future football seasons, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The whole commercial will air on Sunday, Feb. 9, as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles face off in the 2025 Super Bowl, according to People.
