Country Eggs LLC of Lucerne Valley, California, is recalling large brown cage-free eggs linked to a multistate salmonella outbreak that has sickened 95 people in 14 states and hospitalized 18 people, per a recall notice.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted the announcement, which said that the eggs, sometimes marketed as “Sunshine Yolks” could be contaminated with the organism, “which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.”

Per the FDA, “As part of this investigation, FDA conducted traceback based on where ill people reported shopping or eating eggs/egg-containing dishes during the timeframe of interest, and Country Eggs, LLC, was identified as a common supplier.

The notice dated Thursday said those who are infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In very rare circumstances, it said, infection can get into the bloodstream and produce severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

Symptoms typically appear within 12 to 72 hours after eating food that has been contaminated with salmonella and the illness can last from four days to a week. Children younger than 5, older adults and people with weakened immune systems are more prone to severe illness and pregnant women are also more vulnerable.

The eggs are also marketed as “omega-3 golden yolks” eggs and early news said they were distributed from June 16 to July 9 in California and Nevada, but that was later updated to say the eggs are linked to illness in 14 states. The federal government is investigating if they were distributed elsewhere.

The eggs were sold to grocery stores and food service distributors in multiple states.

The company has stopped production of the affected product as the FDA investigates. FDA said, “Do not eat, sell, or serve recalled chicken eggs distributed by Country Eggs, LLC,” while the agency’s investigation is ongoing.

As Today reported, “This recall appears to be separate from an earlier recall due to salmonella contamination, which affected nearly 2 million eggs in June.

What to do

The notice said that consumers:

  • Should not eat any recalled eggs. Trash them or return them to the point of purchase.
  • Wash anything that may have touched the recalled eggs. Use hot soapy water or a dishwasher.
