Nov. 13 is World Kindness Day — an annual reminder that small, intentional acts can ripple far beyond the moment in which they’re given.
UNESCO explains that the day was first launched in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement; the observance grew out of a global coalition dedicated to promoting compassion, generosity and connection across communities. Since then, the day has become a fixture in schools, neighborhoods and workplaces as groups look for simple ways to “pay it forward.”
How people are celebrating
Krispy Kreme is offering customers a dozen free glazed doughnuts with the purchase of any regular-priced dozen on Thursday at participating locations. “We believe in the power of kindness and the joy that comes from sharing,” said Alison Holder, Krispy Kreme chief brand and product officer, in a release.
On X, #WorldKindnessDay is trending as people share stories of service, forgiveness and unexpected generosity.
The United Nations posted, saying, “Kindness is our shared responsibility.”
Even “Sesame Street” celebrated. Cookie Monster, Big Bird and Elmo’s official social media accounts posted. Elmo asked how people are being kind on Thursday, with dozens responding.

How to celebrate
Psychologists note that kindness can make one happier and healthier, and can even make others want to be kind.
Random Acts of Kindness, a nonprofit working to “make kindness the norm,” encourages communities and individuals to participate in ways that fit their daily routines. Here are five simple ideas for celebrating Thursday that they recommend:
- Send a quick message or note just to say you’re thinking of someone.
- Leave a kind review for a small business, library or favorite place in the community.
- Notice someone’s effort and let them know.
- Write a letter to someone who’s made a difference in your life.
- Offer to help — with chores, schoolwork or a project.
While official observances come and go, advocates hope the spirit of the day lasts a little longer. To continue celebrating, Random Acts of Kindness provides a free yearlong calendar with daily ideas to serve others.
