Bad news for hot dogs: Pizza Hut Canada woke up one morning and made a bold move. The chain recently launched its latest creation: the hot dog stuffed-crust pizza, arriving just in time for baseball season.
While the debate over pineapple on pizza continues, Italy may have a new concern. The pizza, available with any standard toppings, features a crust stuffed with hot dogs and served with ketchup and mustard.
The announcement left many Americans shocked that the Canadian branch of the company — rather than the U.S. — rolled out the dough for a dish celebrating two American staples: hot dogs and baseball. That shock turned to a fear of missing out as the reality of the offering not being available stateside sunk in.
In response, Pizza Hut Canada issued an apology to its southern neighbors and extended a peace offering: 50% off a medium hot dog stuffed-crust pie from April 17 through April 19.
There is a catch: the 50% off offering is available in only one Canadian Pizza Hut location, the Hut on Garrison Road in Fort Erie, Ontario. After a quick glance at Google Maps, that location is a mere 11-minute drive across the Peace Bridge in New York from the port of entry on the American side of the border. Well worth it for 50% off a hot dog-stuffed crust.
The new offering has prompted numerous food reviews online and customers are taking different approaches on how to eat the pizza-hot dog hybrid. Some bite the crust first, while others roll the slice into a wrap. Some use the ketchup and mustard provided, while others prefer their pizza-hot dog plain.
Because the pizza was introduced on March 30, some were suspicious it was an early April Fools’ Day prank, but for Pizza Hut, this is serious business.
Those who have shared their reviews online are mixed. One user joked, “each day we stray further and further from the light” after seeing the announcement. Another seemed to quote “Jurassic Park,” writing, “their scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, nobody stopped to think if they should.”
Pizza Hut really can’t be outpizza’d.
This was not the chain’s first foray into hot dog fusion dishes. In 2012, Pizza Hut introduced the world to a “hot dog bites” crust in Asia, before expanding to the U.K., Australia and Canada. The pie was described by one blogger as “delicious but disgusting-if-you-think-about-it.”
It took three years for that version to reach U.S. markets, according to Pizza Hut. In 2015, a one-topping pizza surrounded by 28 bite-sized hot dogs finally hit American menus.
Whether the 2026 hot dog crust will officially cross the border into U.S. Pizza Hut locations remains to be seen. For now, hungry Americans will need their passports to taste the hybrid dish for themselves.
