Voters cast ballots in the 2025 election on Tuesday, the first since President Donald Trump and Republicans won big in 2024. There are several key races to watch, including the battle over redistricting and the New York City mayoral race.

  • In California, Democrats hope to get approval from their voters to complete congressional redistricting to help Democrats pick up 5 more seats in the blue state. Proposition 50 would suspend the state’s independent redistricting commission through 2030. It’s backed by top Democrats, including Democratic National Committee chair Ken Martin, Gov. Gavin Newsom and former President Barack Obama.
  • In Virginia, an attorney general race was turned upside down by some resurfaced text messages. The Democratic candidate Jay Jones sent violent messages to a fellow lawmaker several years ago. Since those messages were released his opponent, Jason Miyares, has been rising in the polls. And the state’s gubernatorial race has also caught national attention, with Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger leading her GOP challenger, current Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.
  • Other big races include a gubernatorial contest in New Jersey, the New York City mayor’s match-up between a democratic socialist and former governor, and ballot measures including abortion laws, and proof of citizenship in voting.
