As soon as we heard Joe Biden would be our next president, we ran outside, started cheering, banged on pots and pans, and celebrated into the night. Our children paraded up and down the street on their bikes, scooters and skateboards holding Biden/Harris signs.

For the most part, we had neighbors walking and driving by cheering with us, but not everyone.

While celebrating, a couple, probably in their 40s, walked by, and a guy lifted up his shirt in a threatening manner to let us know he was open-carrying. My children were right there, playing.

Another couple, probably in their early 60s, rode by on their bikes, and the guy spit at us. My children were right there, playing.

This is not normal.

These weren’t unfamiliar faces, either. They were people I have seen over the years walking through our neighborhood.

Trump has unleashed many things, and although knowing Biden won has provided much relief, I am weary for these last days of Trump’s presidency.

I am an American, this is my country and my home, too.
