Apparently, among other things, the COVID-19 pandemic is causing stress for marriages. It causes husbands and wives to experience excessive time together — or more than they have had in the past.

It reminds me of an experience I had in a classroom while teaching at Brigham Young University some time ago. It was preparation for marriage, and I was trying to teach that marriage takes effort to keep it functioning once the marriage occurs. To do so, I referred to Luke 14:28-30 in the Bible, which states we should “count the cost” or effort to keep something going once we have begun and are not able to finish.

After making these comments I asked for a volunteer to read the scripture about contemporary marriage, and a young woman volunteered. She opened her scriptures but mistakenly turned to Luke 13:28 and began reading: “There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” After class members gained their composure, she acknowledged her error and read Luke 14:28-30.
