I got to know Judge Dee Benson very well. He was in the charter class and I was in the second class at the BYU law school, and later I worked with the trial attorneys in the U.S. Attorney’s office when Dee was the U.S. Attorney.

I also worked as a Department of Interior attorney with DOJ attorneys representing the United States in federal court and appeared before Judge Benson on many occasions. Judge Benson was a great judge. He was knowledgeable, prepared and fair in his decisions.

More importantly, Judge Benson was a decent person who, unlike so many important people, remained well-grounded, personable and interested in others, particularly his staff and friends.
