I recently mailed my ballot for the Republican Primary, even though I consider myself a disaffected Republican who regards President Donald Trump as the worst thing that has ever happened to both the party and our country.
I did not vote for Trump; I voted for former Massachusetts governor, Bill Weld, whose name is on the ballot. I had heard Weld speak on television a number of times and was very impressed by his clear thinking, his well-grounded compassionate conservatism and his sense of honor and integrity. My choice to vote for Weld was confirmed after reading about his interview with the Deseret News and KSL Editorial Boards, and seeing that he considers himself “economically conservative and socially welcoming.” He is also opposed to running up the national debt, and cares about clean air and clean water. This mirrored my own political position concisely.
If you, too, are a disillusioned Republican who is disgusted with Trump’s tactics regarding the Justice Department, his retaliation against witnesses and the great dishonor he has brought to the office of the president of the United States, voting for Bill Weld is a great way to send a message that many Utah Republicans are too smart to be ensnared by the “party above all” slogan.
