Stephanie Condie’s op-ed in Tuesday’s paper does not prove any point (“America’s new threat might be middle-class hunger“ May 11). She compares today’s supposed food shortages to her mother’s hunger in East Germany after World War II. She admits that President Trump did not create problems with our food supply, but her statement that Trump’s “narcissistic approach to the COVID-19 crisis — manifest in his boastful and incoherent press briefings — isn’t helping,” is completely unwarranted. Why does the left continue calling the president names, even though their judgement is unfounded?

Her conclusion is that the problem is not letting illegal migrant workers into this country to help with the getting food from American fields to American kitchens. I don’t believe there is a problem with the food chain — I believe that panic-buying is causing shortages. We can only produce so much food and other supplies during this crisis. I am sure President Trump is aware of the threat of shortages and is giving businesses financial incentives to produce and transport more food.

If anyone is to blame for threats of middle-class hunger, it is the middle class itself. Many are living way above their means and do not have food storage, nor have they set aside money for emergencies. I think this is a wake-up call to all Americans to be prepared for the future.
