I would love to concur with both Boyd Matheson (“A new political home for the ‘moveable middle’: Welcome to the Giraffe Party,” Jan. 20) and Christian Sagers (“I already was a politically homeless conservative. Then came the ‘Trump supernova,’” Jan. 19), as I find them both to be a voice of reason. Unfortunately, I do not believe their postulate of moderate conservatism to be tenable.

In Utah, we have tried, and it has failed. We elected Mitt Romney to be just that: a moderate conservative. And he is jeered on an airplane by his own constituents. I am ashamed of the Republican Party, its standard-bearers and its spear-carriers.

Last week, after 50 years of being a registered Republican, I changed my voter registration to Democrat, even though my fundamental views of governance have not changed one iota. What has changed is the demagoguery of the Republican Party.

I must have developed eye problems, because I can no longer see myself being a member of it.
