In 2020, many prominent Republicans, especially Donald Trump, denied the results of the presidential election. We’ve seen others borrow from this playbook, including gubernatorial candidate Phil Lyman who ultimately lost to Spencer Cox this fall.
Now in Utah, other Republicans sow distrust in our elections. Election denialism is now widely accepted by many in the Utah GOP establishment. Several members of the Utah House of Representatives ultimately went on record with their distrust in our elections in their Dec. 14th opinion piece, “Utah’s elections have become needlessly complicated.” They attack universal vote by mail and the dual path to the ballot as failed experiments, despite polling demonstrating remarkable trust in universal vote by mail and a signature audit that found no glaring irregularities and offered suggestions for improvement.
This piece reveals a simple truth about many in the Utah GOP establishment: they have become needlessly conspiratorial. Our system works best when voters are engaged and the more moderate electorate, not highly partisan delegates, make the final call. It’s time to come back to reality and accept the truth: our system works. Don’t fix what isn’t broken.
