I was shocked to learn about Leland Pollock’s proposal to rename Utah’s historical John Atlantic Burr Trail after Trump.
Pollock clearly does not value the vital Utah contributions by Burr. Pollock’s proposal would erase the legacy of Burr’s foraging the nearly impassable terrain to move his cattle twice a year to provide for his family in the brutal, beautiful landscape of southern Utah. It negates the story of Burr hiring LeRoy Parker (aka Butch Cassidy) to work on his farm for over a year after Parker killed a man in a fight. It mocks the sacrifices related to Burr’s pioneer birth on the ship Brooklyn en route to Utah to live out the family’s religious beliefs.
Innumerable people worldwide learn of Burr and of Utah’s pioneer heritage when they research or visit this incredible trail. What a travesty if Utah and Garfield County were to sell out their heritage for a NY businessman and politician.
If Mom and Grandpa were alive they would say this was a cockamamie plan. Instead, they may just roll over in their graves!
Please join both the living and the dead in opposition to this terrible plan.
