As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and a Utah educator, I strongly oppose HB 77, which bans pride flags in classrooms. Pride flags are not political symbols; they represent acceptance, support and the affirmation of every individual’s value. For LGBTQ+ students, these flags are a vital sign of safety and belonging. Removing them sends a harmful message that their identities are unwelcome, undermining the inclusive environments essential for student success. Access to free and fair public education means all students deserve equitable opportunities to thrive. HB 77 prevents educators from fostering respect and inclusivity, which research shows are critical for LGBTQ+ students’ mental health.

The Trevor Project’s 2023 survey found that affirming spaces significantly reduce the risk of suicide among LGBTQ+ youth. This legislation also restricts teacher autonomy and free expression, suppressing tools like pride flags that promote meaningful conversations about diversity. HB 77’s vague language risks further censorship, jeopardizing symbols of inclusion and diversity.

Instead, lawmakers should focus on policies like anti-bullying initiatives and professional development to support all students. Rejecting HB 77 affirms the dignity of every student and ensures Utah’s schools remain spaces of hope, belonging and opportunity for all.
