I have worked in the school lunch room. I know that they now have rules that every child must have one fruit, one vegetable, one dairy product ... well, I watch every child take all three, and then I see the children just throw them away because they don’t eat them. I have thought if we lunch ladies could go through the trash, we could get enough food that had not been opened and give that food to the homeless or to any organization that feeds people. Our schools are wasting thousands of dollars every month on food that the students have to take, but don’t eat.

Something needs to change. It should not be the school’s responsibility to make sure a child gets one fruit, one vegetable and one source of dairy every day. The schools can help, but they need to count the waste, and what that money could be used for, like paying teachers more. Please think about this and see if there is anything we can do to change it.
