During the past year, I have seen a growing number of individuals in my clinic seeking help to stop using kratom, a substance that is increasingly available in Utah. Kratom, derived from a tree native to Southeast Asia, is sold in various forms including tablets, capsules, powders, teas, and even gummies. While it can have stimulating effects at lower doses, higher or more frequent use can lead to effects similar to those of opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, and morphine.
Of particular concern is the rise in availability of concentrated kratom products, such as 7-Hydroxymitragynine, which is estimated to be significantly more potent than morphine. Regular use of kratom can lead to physical dependence, and stopping suddenly often results in opioid withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms can be severe, including intense cravings, pain, and emotional distress, sometimes leading individuals to feel hopeless or even consider self-harm.
It is important for the community to know that effective medical treatments are available for kratom dependence. Medications such as buprenorphine/naloxone (commonly known as Suboxone) can help manage withdrawal symptoms and support recovery. If you or someone you know is struggling with kratom use, please reach out to a healthcare provider or mental health professional. For clinicians unfamiliar with treatment options, Suboxone is a proven tool that can help patients break free from the cycle of addiction. Awareness and timely intervention can make a significant difference for those affected by kratom addiction.
