My husband and I disagree on politics. We are a microcosm of America, except we are happily married for 13 years and counting. Is it uncomfortable sometimes? Sure. But it’s also our superpower. Why? It helps both of us to see the other side as humans, not objects. It also keeps either of us from becoming too extreme.

So if we can get along, can America?

There is one word that has really helped my husband and me. This word has the power to turn rage into understanding, violence into calm communication. The word is this: dignity.

It feels uncomfortable to say this, but even the worst person in the world deserves dignity. Of course, those who turn to violence need to be brought to justice. But even that can be done with dignity.

I know healing America feels impossible. But pick one neighbor across the divide and find your common humanity. Use The Dignity Index to judge your own discourse and media consumption. If each of us made some small steps, it could help heal America. There is no other viable alternative.
