The recent op-ed “The open heart and door of liberty” (Jan. 28) correctly warns that forgetting our history as a nation of immigrants imperils our future. I am adding my voice to those calling for a renewed commitment to humanity and fair treatment for all — a principle at the heart of the American spirit that rises above any political divide.
The inhumane and targeted treatment of people in this country is unbearable and inexcusable. It is happening to families, friends and neighbors and weighs on us all; to support or stand by without opposition degrades our shared humanity. This is a moment where we must choose our highest values over fear or partisan interest.
If we unite on the fundamental value of humanity, we can reclaim 250 years of progress toward equality. Let us raise our voices to our neighbors and representatives through civil dialogue and peaceful protest. We must stop the spread of fear and align on immigration solutions that prioritize both security and compassion — honoring our shared belief in life, liberty and the dignity of every human being.
