Recent public statements attributed to former President Donald Trump — such as an “Easter post” warning Iran of imminent destruction — should alarm every American who values responsible leadership. Language that treats the prospect of military action as spectacle is reckless; it diminishes the gravity of life-and-death decisions and risks further destabilizing an already volatile world.
But rhetoric is only part of the concern. A consistent pattern has emerged in which Trump has pushed, and at times attempted to override, constitutional limits on presidential power. Critics point to efforts to concentrate authority within the executive branch, sideline congressional oversight and challenge the legitimacy of the judiciary when rulings do not align with his interests. These are not abstract disputes — they strike at the core of the system designed to prevent unchecked power.
Equally troubling are allegations of using federal authority to pressure institutions, including media organizations, universities and political opponents. Such actions erode public trust and undermine the rule of law. Congress cannot remain passive; its constitutional role is essential.
Americans should demand that elected leaders uphold their oaths — and reject any exercise of power that places one individual above the Constitution.
