PHOENIX, Ariz. — Local police authorities responded to reports of a suspicious bag left at the Turning Point USA headquarters on Wednesday morning.
A bomb squad reported to the scene and confirmed the bag wasn’t a threat to the public.
The public memorial for Charlie Kirk lives outside the headquarters, where mourners have gathered every day and night to pay their respects.
Kirk was shot at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 during an on campus event. The suspect in his murder, Tyler James Robinson, 22, appeared before a judge Tuesday.
Over the weekend, authorities detained a young man who stomped on Kirk’s memorial outside the headquarters.
But these instances of violence haven’t deterred people from gathering and sharing their pain, as the Deseret News previously reported. Outside the headquarters on Tuesday night, Catholics for Catholics led another rosary vigil. People turned on their flashlights and prayed together.
Effort to rename Arizona freeway after Kirk
There’s also a legislative effort to rename the local freeway, Loop 202 in Phoenix, to “Charlie Kirk Memorial Loop 202.”
“While Charlie Kirk cannot be replaced, this effort can make sure his legacy lives on,” said Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen.
The bill will be introduced in the legislative session in January.
“Through God’s grace, by renaming this highway we can ensure that his name, his mission, and his witness to the gospel will endure for generations to come,” he said.
“Even in the midst of sorrow, God’s Word reminds us that hope endures. Renaming this highway is a small step toward honoring Charlie’s immense contribution, but it is also a call for each of us to press on in faith, to live courageously for Jesus, and to stand firm in the principles Charlie so boldly championed.”
