President Donald Trump will travel with other high-level officials to Phoenix, Arizona., on Air Force One early Sunday morning to attend the funeral for political commentator Charlie Kirk.
“It was a very sad weekend in the sense that we lost a great person,” Trump says Monday.
Kirk, 31, was assassinated at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. The suspect in his murder, Tyler James Robinson, 22, appeared before a judge Tuesday.
Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, is first on the list of speakers ahead of the U.S. president.
She delivered a public address roughly 2½ days after her husband’s death where she vowed to keep fighting for the ideals Kirk championed.
She also promised to grow Turning Point USA and Turning Point Action and uphold her husband’s legacy. Erika Kirk has also shared pictures of her mourning beside her late husband’s casket and a video of him telling their daughter their love story on social media.
Last week, Erika Kirk flew back from Utah to Arizona with her husband’s casket on Air Force Two. She was accompanied by Vice President JD Vance. Charlie Kirk and Vance shared a close friendship, as the vice president and Kirk’s inner circle have expressed since the assassination.
