More information is being released regarding the alleged shooter who appeared to target U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, fatally killing one and wounding two others in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said in a press release that a sniper opened fire “indiscriminately” from a rooftop at a nearby ICE Dallas field office and van where the victims were shot.
The suspected gunman was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the press release, shell casings were discovered with “Anti-ICE” engraved on them. The federal department is calling the incident a targeted attack on law enforcement.
Trump and his Cabinet react to shooting
Both U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and President Donald Trump called out Democratic leadership and the media, saying they’ve used harmful rhetoric that demonizes law enforcement and puts them in danger of doing their jobs.
“For months, we’ve been warning politicians and the media to tone down their rhetoric about ICE law enforcement before someone was killed. ... Their rhetoric about ICE has consequences,” Noem said. “The men and women of ICE are fathers and mothers, sons and daughters. They get up every morning to try and make our communities safer. Like everyone else, we just want to go home to our families at night.”
Trump added in a post on Truth Social, “The Brave Men and Women of ICE are just trying to do their jobs, and remove the ‘WORST of the WORST’ Criminals out of our Country, but they are facing an unprecedented increase in threats, violence, and attacks by Deranged Radical Leftists. This violence is the result of the Radical Left Democrats constantly demonizing Law Enforcement, calling for ICE to be demolished, and comparing ICE Officers to ‘Nazis.’ The continuing violence from Radical Left Terrorists, in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, must be stopped.
“I AM CALLING ON ALL DEMOCRATS TO STOP THIS RHETORIC AGAINST ICE AND AMERICA’S LAW ENFORCEMENT, RIGHT NOW!”
FBI Director Kash Patel said on X that an “ideological motive” seems logical after initial investigation review.
“These despicable, politically motivated attacks against law enforcement are not a one-off,” Patel continued. “We are only miles from Prairieland, Texas where just two months ago an individual ambushed a separate ICE facility targeting their officers. It has to end and the FBI and our partners will lead these investigative efforts to see to it that those who target our law enforcement are pursued and brought to the fullest extent of justice.”
Who is the alleged shooter?
Sources familiar with the investigation have told multiple news outlets that the shooter has been identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn.
According to The New York Times, Jahn was raised in a suburb of Dallas and was apparently living with his parents as recently as a few months ago. He voted in a Democratic primary in Texas in 2020, but was registered as an independent in Oklahoma, where his parents own property, and where he voted in the 2024 presidential election.
Fox News reported that Jahn had been residing in Durant, Oklahoma, at the time of the shooting.
Authorities confirmed that Jahn was found dead with a rifle on a nearby rooftop.
