WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson announced on Tuesday that he and his Israeli counterpart Amir Ohana will rally world leaders to nominate President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize next year.

Johnson, R-La., said that he and Ohana, who serves as the speaker of the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, decided earlier this week they would “embark upon a project together” to combine as many speakers and parliament presidents as possible to jointly nominate Trump for his role in brokering a ceasefire deal in Israel. The deal resulted in the release of more than 20 hostages on Monday, with Trump declaring the end to the two-year war.

“No one has ever deserved that prize more, and that is an objective fact,” Johnson told reporters on Tuesday. “As Speaker Ohana said before the Knesset yesterday, ‘Whoever saves one life, it is as though he has saved an entire world.’”

The announcement comes after Ohana praised Trump as a “giant of Jewish history,” telling the Knesset on Monday that the president would be remembered “for thousands of years.”

“Mr. President, you stand before the people of Israel not as another American president, but as a giant of Jewish history — one for whom we must look back, two and a half millennia into the mists of time to find a parallel, in Cyrus the Great,” Ohana said, referring to the ancient king known for freeing the Jewish people from Babylonian captivity.

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado on Friday for her fight to liberate the country from its current authoritarian government. Her nomination garnered the support of several prominent Republicans, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart, R-Fla.

The White House initially criticized what they considered a snub of Trump’s efforts to end several international conflicts.

“President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will,” Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump administration, said in a post on X on Friday. “The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”

Trump later said that in a call with Machado last week, she told the president she accepted the award in his honor.

Trump has long sought the prestigious award, and Johnson’s announcement on Tuesday underscores the potential support he has not only from Republican leaders in the United States but also across the world.

The Nobel Peace Prize is announced on Oct. 10 of each year.
