The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran at the end of February, over fears the county was developing a nuclear weapon and missiles that could reach Europe.
Iran retaliated by launching strikes on its neighbors across the Middle East. In April, Iran and the U.S. reached the first of several fragile ceasefire deals.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway just south of Iran, has emerged as a major point of contention in the conflict. As the strikes began, Iran placed underwater mines in the strait and attacked ships attempting to pass through. Then in mid-June, the country announced it would charge service fees for passage through the international waterway.
The U.S. pushed back on Iran’s assertion, and President Donald Trump said the U.S. will ensure ships safe passage through the strait. Whether he can do that remains to be seen.
