Words can get you in trouble.

And sometimes the difference between big trouble and no trouble at all is very slim.

Take, for instance, the remark by former BYU receiver Austin Collie in 2007, after BYU defeated Utah in football.

"Obviously, when you're doing what's right on and off the field, I think the Lord steps in and plays a part," Collie said.

That brought a firestorm of controversy and criticism.

Though Collie was just reiterating points his coach often made, it drew outrage from Utah fans who felt Collie was claiming God wanted BYU to win.

Curiously, last week after Utah's one-point win over New Mexico in basketball, Ute coach Jim Boylen said almost the same thing. Except he left out deity.

"You do things the right way and good things come back to you," said Boylen.

Sounds an awful lot like Collie.

Except the religious reference.

Which is what got Collie in trouble in the first place.
