How the Utes broke through Washington’s unique zone defense

Nahziah Carter missed a fadeaway jumper in the key with 29 seconds to play, giving the Utes (11-7, 2-4 Pac-12) the chance to take the lead trailing 66-65. Rylan Jones was fouled above the 3-point line on the ensuing possession and hit both free throws to give Utah the 67-66 lead, its first lead since 10-9 with 12:26 left in the first half.

Washington then turned the ball over on a Jamal Bey offensive foul with under a second to play, wrapping up the Utes’ win.

Here are three takeaways that defined the game:

  • A six-point possession saw Utah cut its deficit from seven points to one with 2:04 to play. A dead ball technical foul on Jaden McDaniels led to the Utes shooting four free throws, including the technical shots, and making all four, followed by Utah retaining possession. Jones was then fouled on a 3-point attempt and hit 2 of 3 to make it a one-point game.
  • The Huskies (12-8, 2-5 Pac-12) had a decided advantage in 3-point shooting, making 9 of 20 while the Utes hit just 3 of 24. Washington also shot 51% from the field, compared to 34% for Utah.
  • The Utes, though, had the edge at the free-throw line, making 24 of 32, compared to 11 of 14 for the Huskies. Utah also owned a 38-29 rebounding edge and was led by 13 points, nine assists and seven rebounds from the freshman Jones.
