High school drill: Kanab wins second straight 2A state title

OREM — Kanab won its second consecutive drill team state title with a strong performance at UVU on Friday night.

Kanab swept all three events during the finals of the 2A state tournament at UVU on Friday to claim its second state title in school history. Enterprise finished in second place, followed by North Summit in third.

“To win the 2A drill team state championship two consecutive years is a dream come true. It’s difficult to put into words the pride and love I felt as I watch the girls give everything they had on Friday night. They danced heart and soul determined to walk out of the arena winners. Four days prior to state, one of our team members had some serious health issues, this made it impossible for her to compete. She was in two of our state routines. We scrambled to fill the spots with alternate dancers. The three underclassman stepped up and practiced extra hours and hours to learn the new spots with support from the seasoned team members as they rallied around them. I watch stunned and teary-eyed as the three alternates competed with such determination and confidence. This united team not only won, but swept. KHS Larriettes are true competitors and have such courageous hearts.” said Kanab coach Shellie Stewart.

Members of this year’s Kanab team are: Emmorie Decker, Shelbi Fisher, Savanah Jenson, Abby Orton, Alissa Chamberlain, Allison Clarkson, Madison Crofts, Sadie Fox, Caroline Giddings, Jocee Peatross, Alyssa Stewart, Joelle Werlinger, Harlee Riggins, Leisel Baird, Mirandah Ott, Sophia Stewart, Aliya Massengale and Kessa Wheeler.

Coaches are Shellie Stewart, Emily Koelliker and Mikkel Glaizer.
