SALT LAKE CITY — One of the bigger surprises from Sunday’s NFL action came courtesy of the Las Vegas Raiders, who handed the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs their first loss of the season, 40-32.
Las Vegas coaches and players credited a team effort following the win, which gave the Raiders just their second victory over their AFC West rival in their past 12 meetings and first win over the Chiefs in Kansas City since 2012. “We had a lot of guys step up, play hard and finish,” Raiders coach Jon Gruden told reporters.
Among the role players to make an impact Sunday was former Utah running back Devontae Booker, who’s in his first season with Las Vegas. Booker made his biggest impact during the second quarter when the Raiders turned a 14-3 deficit into a 24-all game by halftime.
That included a 43-yard scamper, Booker’s longest run of the season, to the Chiefs’ 32 on the first play after Kansas City had pushed its lead to 21-10. Four plays later, the Raiders scored on a short touchdown pass.
On the previous possession, Booker had four touches — three carries and a reception, including a 7-yard run and picking up a first down on a third-and-1 — before quarterback Derek Carr found Nelson Agholor for a 59-yard touchdown.
Booker finished the game with 62 rushing yards on seven carries — an 8.9 yards-per-carry average — and added one reception for 5 yards on a season-high 15 offensive snaps. Las Vegas had 144 rushing yards, including 77 yards and two touchdowns from lead back Josh Jacobs, and held a nearly 11-minute time of possession advantage over the Chiefs.
It was the fifth-best rushing day of Booker’s five-year career, and the most in almost two years since he ran for 78 on nine carries while playing for Denver against Kansas City on Oct. 28, 2018.
On Monday, Gruden said the Raiders would look to get Booker more involved going forward to spell Jacobs.
“We’ve got to rest Jacobs a little bit more and secondly Booker is a good back. You’ll see a little bit more of Booker the next 10 or 12 weeks,” Gruden said, per Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune.
