SALT LAKE CITY — BYU held on for a tough 72-71 victory over San Diego at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego on Saturday night, as the Toreros’ 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.

Here are three takeaways that defined the game:

  • Yoeli Childs was limited to 25 minutes after picking up his third foul with 17:17 to play and his fourth with 10:07 remaining. Childs finished the game with 17 points and seven rebounds while scoring the game-winner. Yauhen Massalski put USD ahead 71-70 on a layup with 25 seconds to play before Childs responded with a dunk to put BYU ahead by one with 11.1 seconds left. The Cougars then forced a corner 3 from Braun Hartfield, which bounced off the rim.
  • BYU (21-7, 10-3 West Coast Conference) was outshot by San Diego from the field — 44.8% to 50% — and the Toreros had seven 3-pointers to nine for the Cougars, two nights after BYU hit a program-record 18 against Loyola Marymount. BYU, though, hit 11 of 16 free throws — including a perfect 3 of 3 from TJ Haws, who had 17 points and 10 assists — while San Diego made just 4 of 8.
  • In a contest featuring teams at opposite ends of the WCC standings, there were 19 lead changes, and neither team led by more than seven points. San Diego (9-19, 2-11 WCC) struggled with 16 turnovers, while BYU had 11. The Cougars owned an 18-11 edge in points off turnovers.
