Grantsville High girls basketball team wins against Morgan High at Morgan High School in Morgan on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020.

Ivy Ceballo, Deseret News

The 3A girls basketball state tournament got underway last week, with first-round games played at home sites across the state on Feb. 11. Action really picked up Feb. 14, though, in the second round at USU Eastern.

The tournament’s top seeds took care of business, by and large, as South Sevier, Judge Memorial and Grantsville all recorded runaway victories.

The seeds below those provided the fireworks. No. 8 Manti eked out a tough 35-31 win over No. 9 Delta, setting up a rematch with the top-seeded Rams. No. 7-seeded Morgan then held off No. 10 South Summit for a 48-44 win. And finally, No. 11 San Juan pulled off the upset of the tournament thus far, with a 57-55 win over the defending champion Emery Spartans.

In alphabetical order, these are the teams that remain in the 3A girls state basketball tournament, which continues on Thursday at Salt Lake Community College.

2019 postseason: Lost to Richfield 51-27 in 3A quarterfinals

Deseret News staff writer Trent Wood’s bracket: Loss to Richfield in quarterfinals

Wood’s Workup: The Dinos are the only team to beat South Sevier this season, making them one of the tournament’s more dangerous teams. And yet, two in-season losses to Richfield suggest Carbon’s tournament run should end in the quarterfinals. The Dinos could do anything from lose in their next game to win the state championship.

Last state championship: N/A

2019 postseason: Lost to Emery 59-31 in 3A state championship game

Deseret News staff writer Trent Wood’s bracket: Win over Richfield in championship

Wood’s Workup:: The Cowboys have been as good as any team in the classification this year, thanks to their high-powered and balanced offensive approach. A quarterfinal matchup with San Juan could be surprisingly difficult — the Broncos are rolling right now — and a semifinal clash with Judge Memorial is anyone’s guess. If Grantsville makes it to the state championship game, though, they are as good a bet as anyone to win it.

No. 2 Judge Memorial Bulldogs (19-2)

2019-2020 Schedule

  • #25 Emily Malouf, Sr., Forward (6.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.0 spg)
  • #20 Abbey Storms, Sr., Guard (5.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.3 apg, 2.1 spg)

Scoring offense: 67.0 ppg (1st in 3A)

Scoring defense: 37.6 ppg (6th in 3A)

Last state championship: None

2019 postseason: Lost to Juab 48-44 in 3A quarterfinals

Deseret News staff writer Trent Wood’s bracket: Loss to Grantsville in semifinals

Wood’s Workup:: There is no more explosive an offense in 3A than that of Judge Memorial. Sophomore Teya Sidberry has been a 3A MVP candidate, if not the likely MVP. A state championship is definitely in the cards, but the Bulldogs split the season series with Grantsville and the likely semifinal rubber match looks to be a complete toss-up.

manti_logo.jpg

No. 8 Manti Templars (16-6)

2019-2020 Schedule

  • #32 Sharlie Alder, So., Guard (5.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.1 spg)
  • #5 Taylor Chidester, Jr., Guard (4.9 ppg, 0.9 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.3 spg)

Scoring offense: 47.1 ppg (10th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 34.6 ppg (2nd in 3A)

Last state championship: 1984 (2A)

2019 postseason: Did not qualify

Deseret News staff writer Trent Wood’s bracket: Loss to South Sevier in quarterfinals

Wood’s Workup:: Manti had to scrape and claw its way past Delta in the second round of the tournament and a quarterfinal matchup against South Sevier promises to be an even more difficult test. The Templars lost to the Rams earlier this year in the Central Utah Basketball Preview, but battled South Sevier into overtime before coming up short. While an upset cannot be counted out, Manti’s tournament run is likely to end in the quarterfinals.

morgan_logo.jpg

No. 7 Morgan Trojans (14-10)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head Coach: Sterling Mack (second year)

Region: Finished 3rd in Region 13 with a 7-3 record

  • #5 Janel Blazzard, So., Guard (7.8 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.1 spg)
  • #35 Alex Trussell, So., Forward (7.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 0.5 apg, 0.8 spg)
  • #12 Jacie House, Sr., Guard (5.6 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.3 apg, 0.9 spg)

Scoring offense: 55.2 ppg (5th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 47.4 ppg (13th in 3A)

Last state championship: 2004 (3A)

2019 postseason: Lost to Emery 75-44 in 3A quarterfinals

Deseret News staff writer Trent Wood’s bracket: Loss to Judge Memorial in quarterfinals

Wood’s Workup:: The Trojans have been wildly inconsistent this year, but have demonstrated the capability of playing with the best of the classification on multiple occasions. Morgan split the season series with Grantsville, and while the Trojans lost to Judge Memorial twice, those defeats came by a combined seven points. The Trojans’ success this season has been largely due to outside shooting, which could propel the team past Judge Memorial in the quarterfinals and deep into the tournament. If Morgan misses the mark, though, an early exit is likely.

richfield_logo.jpg

No. 4 Richfield Wildcats (18-5)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head Coach: Marc Peterson (19th year)

Region: Finished 2nd in Region 12 with a 8-2 record

  • #34 Jarica Steck, Sr., F (14.6 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.3 apg, 2.0 spg)
  • #2 Passion Reitz, Sr., G (10.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 4.2 apg, 3.1 spg)
  • #0 Sipola Vakautakakala, Jr., F (8.7 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 0.8 apg, 0.7 spg)
  • #25 Nicole Willardson, Fr., C (4.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 0.4 apg, 0.3 spg)
  • #5 Jordyn Moon, Jr., G (3.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 3.3 apg, 2.9 spg)

Scoring offense: 50.4 ppg (8th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 39.9 ppg (8th in 3A)

Last state championship: 2013 (2A)

2019 postseason: Lost to Grantsville 40-39 in 3A semifinals

Deseret News staff writer Trent Wood’s bracket: Loss to Grantsville in championship

Wood’s Workup:: The Wildcats have been inconsistent at times this season, which a lopsided loss to Judge Memorial and a convincing win over Grantsville can attest to. That being said, Richfield has already beaten Carbon twice this year and has played South Sevier close on multiple occasions. A loss to Carbon in the quarterfinals seems as likely as a berth in the state title game. In other words, anything can happen with Richfield involved.

san_juan_logo.jpg

No. 11 San Juan Broncos (12-9)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head Coach: Laura Stearns

Region: Finished 5th in Region 12 with a 3-7 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Grantsville, 9:30 p.m. (At SLCC)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: Defeated Emery 57-55

  • #21 Tasiah Little, Sr., Guard (15.7 ppg)
  • #24 Madison Palmer, Sr., Forward (12.9 ppg)
  • #40 Syannah Ketchum, Sr., Guard (6.7 ppg)
  • #25 Sadie Brown, Jr., Forward (4.8 ppg)
  • #10 Brittany Grover, Sr., Forward (4.7 ppg)

Scoring offense: 55.9 ppg (2nd in 3A)

Scoring defense: 46.1 ppg (12 in 3A)

Last state championship: N/A

2019 postseason: Lost to Judge Memorial 54-37 in 3A first round

Deseret News staff writer Trent Wood’s bracket: Loss to Grantsville in quarterfinals

Wood’s Workup:: There may not be a hotter team in the state tournament than the Broncos. After an up and down season, San Juan has reeled off three straight victories, including a 10-point win over Carbon to end the regular season and a two-point upset over the defending champion Emery Spartans in the second round. The Broncos face a stiff test in the quarterfinals with Grantsville, but San Juan owns the second-best scoring offense in 3A, so anything is possible.

south_sevier_logo.jpg

No. 1 South Sevier Rams (22-1)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head Coach: Stuart Hepworth

Region: Finished 1st in Region 12 with a 9-1 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Manti, 5:50 p.m. (At SLCC)

  • How advanced to quarterfinals:
  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: Defeated Providence Hall 52-25

Best victory: Defeated Pine View 56-50 on Dec. 6

Top contributors:

  • #10 Kenzie Jones, Sr., Guard (14.1 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 3.4 apg, 2.4 spg)
  • #13 Presley Chappell, Jr., Center (12.7 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 1.7 apg, 0.7 spg)
  • #1 Brookell Brindley, Sr., Guard (7.9 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.6 spg)
  • #4 Leah Torgersen, Jr., Forward (7.5 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.1 spg)
  • #12 Cassie Johnson, Jr., Forward (6.2 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.3 spg)

Scoring offense: 55.2 ppg (4th in 3A)

Scoring defense: 36.0 ppg (3rd in 3A)

Last state championship: 2008 (2A)

2019 postseason: Lost to Grantsville 63-58 in 3A quarterfinals

Deseret News staff writer Trent Wood’s bracket: Loss to Richfield in semifinals

Wood’s Workup:: The Rams have been the best team in 3A for much, if not all, of the season. With only one loss — a late-season setback against Carbon — South Sevier is well-deserving of the top seed in the tournament. That being said, it is extremely difficult to beat a team three times in a single year, a feat the Rams will likely have to pull off to qualify for the state championship game. Once there, they’d have to beat either Judge Memorial or Grantsville, arguably the most difficult opponents South Sevier will face this season.
