FARMINGTON — The Mountain View curse struck again for a Farmington High School girls team on Thursday night.

No. 18 seed Mountain View stunned No. 2 seed Farmington in the 5A second round, eking out the 42-40 victory after rallying from a five-point halftime deficit in the low-scoring game.

Nicole Riley scored the winning lay-up on an assist from Samiana Suguturaga with 23 seconds remaining, and the Bruins played great defense on Farmington’s final possession to hold on for the win.

Suguturaga scored 26 points for the second straight playoff game to the lead the Bruins to the upset.

“Farmington is a solid team and we knew we had a good game ahead of us. We did our best to prepare the girls, but in the end it came down to our girls making big plays, and taking pride in their defense,” said Mountain View coach Gentry Dickerson. “Before the game we talked about drawing from others successes, one of our girls got hot and it started a domino effect. It was a fun to see my girls have that much success.”

Back in the fall in girls soccer, No. 16 seed Mountain View beat No. 1 seed Farmington in the 5A second round 1-0. In volleyball, the teams met in the state championship and No. 2 seed Mountain View beat No. 1 seed Farmington 3-1.

Farmington leading scorer Valerie Kunzler missed the game with an illness.
