LOGAN — It was Senior Night Tuesday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on the campus of Utah State University, and the Aggies honored their seniors in the best possible way, with a 94-56 romp over San Jose State.

Utah State improved to 23-7 overall with the win, and 12-5 in Mountain West Conference play.

Here are three takeaways from the Aggies’ runaway win over the Spartans.

  • In all reality, the game was over almost as soon as it began. Utah State opened play with a 13-0 run, a burst that ballooned into a 19-0 run and then a 25-2 run. By halftime, the Aggies led 51-14. If a mercy rule existed in college basketball, the teams would not have returned for the second half.
  • USU shot lights out from behind the arc to begin the contest. The Aggies made seven of their first nine attempts from 3-point range, thanks to the stylings of Sam Merrill, Brock Miller, Abel Porter and Alphonso Anderson. Utah State eventually cooled down a bit and finished 10 for 21 from deep, but the early barrage was clinical in nature.
  • The game was Sam Merrill’s last as an Aggie, in Logan that is, and the senior guard did not disappoint. Merrill finished with 18 points, on 5 of 12 shooting. He made four 3-pointers, was a perfect 4 for 4 at the charity stripe and handed out seven assists for good measure. USU also benefitted from a strong nights by Neemias Queta and Justin Bean. Queta finished with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Bean added 12 points and 13 boards.
