SALT LAKE CITY — BYU turned a close game late in the first half into a blowout, cruising past Portland 85-54 at the Chiles Center in Portland.

Here are three takeaways that defined the game:

  • Jake Toolson was efficient for the Cougars, making 8 of 10 shots from the field and 6 of 8 3-pointers to score 22 points. BYU shot 50.9% from the field, including 56.7% in the second half, and Alex Barcello aded 17 points.
  • The Cougars (18-7, 7-3 West Coast Conference) put the game away by scoring 20 of the first 24 points in the second half, building a 63-35 lead.
  • Portland (9-16, 1-9 WCC) held Yoeli Childs down early, as he didn’t hit a field goal until there were two seconds left in first half, scoring an and-one after starting 0 for 5 from the field to start. He came on strong in the second half and finished with 22 points and eight rebounds on 8 of 14 shooting.
