Note: North Sevier finished with a 4-8 overall record in 2019 and was seventh in 2A South with a 0-6 record. It was RPI seed No. 10 in the 2A playoffs, and was eliminated by Milford 55-24 in quarterfinals.

SALINA — This season marks the beginning of a new chapter for the North Sevier Wolves with the reins of the program being handed to new coach Wyatt Mason, a North Sevier alum.

Head coach: Wyatt Mason

Entering his first season as head coach at his alma mater, which he led to a 1A state title in 2008. He’s a graduate of Southern Utah University.

“We’re going to miss (Coach) Devin Lindley and what he did for our program,” Mason said. “He did a good job making our program a competitive program. We’re now looking to take that next step.”

That mission to take the next step will be aided by the fact that the Wolves have a decent amount of experience returning for this season. The offense, led by second team all-state running back Landon Gale, returns six starters. Three of those returning starters (Gage Nielson, Kolton Noyes, and Bransyn Christiansen) are on the offensive line. That stability up front could be a much needed luxury as the Wolves look to break in new starting quarterback Ryker Frischknecht.

The Wolves also bring back six starting players defensively. The secondary should certainly be a strength as four of those six starters can be found in the defensive backfield.

Mason certainly has expectations and goals for this season’s team and for his first year as head coach. “Three out of the last four years we’ve made it to the quarterfinals. I think a very realistic goal is for us to advance to the semis.”

Coach Mason’s thoughts on how his players dealt with the COVID-19 adversity in the spring and summer:

“Being out of the city, the worry about it isn’t as bad so in that way we’ve been fortunate. I think our numbers are up because of it and the lack of participation they had in other sports. As strange as it sounds, it’s been more of a positive than a negative.”

Deseret News outlook for 2020

North Sevier struggled mightily in region play last season. That difficulty last season has potentially given this season’s group a valuable lesson on what it takes to win, but winning will likely be difficult again this season in a 2A South region that is loaded with talent. The Wolves will be competitive in most games, but may also be overwhelmed.
