Like most of the other golfers in the field, Tony Finau and Preston Summerhays found the Winged Foot Golf Club to be much more challenging for Friday’s second round at the U.S. Open in Mamaroneck, New York.

Both players had higher scores, as did 101 of the other 141 golfers in the field, as Finau shot 73 and Summerhays came in with a 77. Finau, a Salt Lake City native, stands at 142 heading into the weekend and is six shots behind leader Patrick Reed. The 18-year-old Summerhays, a two-time Utah Amateur champion, was hoping to make the cut but finished at 149, three shots off the cut line.

Preston Summerhays off to solid start at US Open with 72, while Tony Finau shoots a 69

Finau went out in the morning and, playing the back nine first, had a good first nine with a 1-under-par 34 with two birdies and a bogey. But a rough second nine sent him down the leaderboard, as he struggled with bogeys at 1, 2, 3, 6 and 8 with a birdie at No. 7 following his first-round 69.

Summerhays, who qualified by winning the U.S. Junior Amateur in the summer of 2019, teed off in the afternoon after shooting a first-round 72. He got off to a great start, hitting his approach at No. 1 within a foot for a tap-in birdie. However, that was his last birdie of the day, as he bogeyed No. 2 and put seven more bogeys on his scorecard.

Summerhays was hoping to win low amateur honors in the tournament, but only one of 13 amateurs made the cut — John Pak, who stands at 145.
