Turnover issues doom Utes

Three turnovers in the final two minutes were costly for Utah (6-7, 3-6 Pac-12). That included turnovers on back-to-back possessions in the final minute, as Washington (3-11, 2-7 Pac-12) turned those two turnovers into the final five points of the game. The Huskies scored 22 points off 16 Utah turnovers.

Washington finished the game on a 7-0 run after going down three on Ian Martinez’s jumper with 1:39 to play. Jamal Bey hit a jumper to make it 79-78, then after a Martinez turnover with just under a minute to play, Erik Stevenson scored three on an and-1 to put Washington up 81-79. Rylan Jones then turned the ball over again with 37 seconds left, and Bey added a pair of three throws with 13 seconds left to account for the final score.

Career-high efforts not enough

The Utes, who led by as many as 12 points in the first half, squandered career games from Branden Carlson and Timmy Allen. Carlson scored a career-high 18 points, including a critical 3-pointer in the second half, and added five rebounds and two blocks. Allen had a double-double with 15 points and a career-best 10 assists, to go along with seven rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal, though he had four turnovers.

That wasn’t enough to overpower a pair of big efforts from Washington’s Bey and Quade Green. Bey scored a career-high 28 points, shooting 10 of 11 from the field with four 3-pointers, and added five rebounds, two assists and four steals. Green put up 20 points, four 3-pointers, four rebounds and four assists.

3-point edge

Washington made 12 3-pointers, compared to seven for Utah. In the second half, the Huskies made six, eclipsing two from the Utes. In addition to four each from Bey and Green, Stevenson (who had 18 points) added two for Washington.

The Utes, meanwhile, had just one player with multiple 3-pointers: Riley Battin, who had three 3-pointers and 15 points off the bench.
