Carbon coach Allie Chamberlain wasn’t quite sure what to expect coming into the season, and it had nothing to do with the hurdles and obstacles created by COVID-19.

After repeating as 3A state champs a year ago, Carbon graduated several key seniors from that championship squad, and in 2021 the Dinos would be relying on several freshmen to fill those roles.

Chamberlain ended up finding the perfect balance for Carbon.

Led by some strong upperclassmen and with just enough contribution from those freshmen, Carbon 3-peated as 3A state champs on Saturday at the South Davis Rec Center in Bountiful. The Dinos finished with 258 points, followed by Judge in second with 228 points and Emery with 211.

“They wanted it, and they tried hard and they earned every bit of it,” said Chamberlain, who said her team’s drive and determination never wavered despite the inconveniences of COVID-19.

Senior Nicole Swasey credits a strong bond between the swimmers as a big reason why.

“We have a very long season, so staying together with practice even during a pandemic, we were still able to be happy and were able to push through,” said Swasey.

Carbon’s only two first-place finishes on Saturday both came in relays, the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

The key was its depth in the sprints (50 and 100 freestyles) and the 100 breaststroke. The Dinos placed three girls in the top eight in the 50 free, and then two each in the 100 free and 100 breaststroke.

“We had pretty stacked numbers between consolation and finals, and that’s where it helps, and then to have that much depth to pull from for our relays is amazing,” said Chamberlain.

Tyrca Jaramillo and Swasey clinched the title with their second and third-place finishes respectively in the final individual event of the night, the 100 breaststroke.

The night before in the prelims, Swasey set a new school record with a time of 1:12.93.

“She’s fought so hard to get where she’s at. Her brother and sister both have records on our board and she wanted it,” said Chamberlain.

The five freshmen who contributed points on Saturday for Carbon were Hadley Bower, Mia Crompton, Jennacie Jefferey, Alyssa Chamberlain and Ellie Hansen.

Runner-up Judge’s only first-place finish came in the 400 free relay as it also relied on its overall depth for the second-place trophy.

There were two multi-event winners at the state meet, Grantsville’s Hadley Begay (100 butterfly and 500 free) and Emery’s Haley Guymon (100 and 200 free).

Other event winners were Rowland Hall’s Grace Smith (200 individual medley), Wasatch Academy’s Gen Jones (50 free), Maeser Prep’s Sarah Puertas (100 backstroke) and Juab’s Grace Holman (100 breaststroke).

Smith was named the 3A swimmer of the year for her times throughout the 2020-21 season.

“It’s been a crazy season, but I’m really happy with how I did. I’m excited I ended it this way,” said Smith.
